Blonde & Beard
25 Beach Road
Muizenberg, Cape Town
8am to 5pm
Muizenberg beachfront is quickly becoming the hub of activity that it was meant to be years ago. Along with most of its “uncouth” characters, it has however arguably lost much of its soul. Crummy restaurants with dwindling clientele have been replaced with budding franchises that, while they draw in the crowds, lack heart and character. That is, except for a few gems that have succeeded in keeping Muizenberg’s quirky feel alive. Blonde & Beard is one of these.
Blonde and Beard is a small café that was started a little over a year ago by Katie (Blonde) and Elishah (Beard), a couple in their early twenties. Much like Muizenberg, the place is a melting pot of different cultures, nationalities and classes.
At any given time, you will find the true Muizenberg locals gathered here, hashing out crazy new business plans, discussing Chinese medicine or simply working because the internet is damn fast (major bonus).
Apart from the speedy internet connection, a major drawcard is the incredible coffee, which I would go as far as to say is one of the best in the south of Cape Town. Elishah makes the coffee himself and while I can’t say I’m a coffee connoisseur, it is so good that you really wouldn’t need to know much about coffee to appreciate it.
As can be expected from a café run by young owners that presumably were students not too long ago, their offering is budget friendly. There are well-priced meal options and delicious pastries and cakes. Among everyone’s favourite is the classic breakfast special – R45 for a coffee and an English breakfast. As a bit of a culinary minimalist my personal favourite is just plain avocado on rye with a sprinkling of lemon juice. Apart from the offering, I’m also a big fan of the waiters– down-to-earth, friendly and chilled out, the kind of people you’d want to hang out with. If your weekend missions take you down south, there’s really no reason not to pop in at Blonde and Beard, it’s an all-round pleasurable experience and you can feel good about yourself for supporting a young local business!
