Cape Town’s young, old and arty came out in full swing for this month’s First Thursday, igniting the inner city with music, crowds of cool people and an electric vibe that reverberated throughout the CBD.
The event, which happens on the first Thursday of each month, is a chance for Capetonians to explore art galleries, stores and cultural events in the Cape Town CBD till late. This event is open to everyone and anyone, allowing for a true nocturnal cultural mix in the inner city.
This month’s First Thursday, although bitterly cold due to the Mother City’s winter season fast approaching, did not disappoint, with throngs of spectators out in the streets – checking out amazing art at galleries such as The Smith Studio Gallery which showcased sculptural works and multi-media pieces, the up-and-coming work of talented artists at Youngblood Gallery and cool collaborations at The Red Bull Studios.
All the favourite local bars and good-vibe hangouts were open till late as well, so you could grab a drink at Clarke’s, feast on some to-die-for organic and ethically-made burgers at IYO burgers and then pop around to &Union for another drink. The CBD streets were also scattered with various food trucks and stalls selling mouth-watering meals for on-the-go gallery hoppers. Artisans including furniture designers, jewellery makers and fashion designers also had their wares on sale.
All-in-all First Thursdays was a fun week-night out; the perfect starter for the weekend. The next First Thursday will take place on the 2 July 2015, come rain or shine. First Thursday also takes place in Johannesburg on the same evening as the Cape Town event.
