Its all about Oskar the Ostrich, born and raised in Durban and making his way down to Cape Town, his famous shenanigans have made him the Village Idiots Mascot, you can meet him behind the bar every night sharing his stories and buying shots for the pretty ladies (please note Oskar is not real anymore as he stuffed up – lol – you will get what I mean when you go!) . Cape Town’s newest Hotspot. Its on a street that hasn’t really got anything else on it apart from Hemelhuijs, which probably is one of the best breakfast and lunch places in town – more on that later.
The street it is on leads to the fanwalk and bridge over Buitengracht street to DeWaterkant area. I am glad that someone has opened up something there, Waterkant Street feels like you are New Orleans, except it is empty at night, such a shame as it could very easily have such a great vibe. The street is screaming out to be colonised by Cape Towns Hipsters and Yuccis to turn it into the “New Bree Street”. Back to the Idiot… the interior styling is along the lines of a hipsters hunting lodge. The bar is nice and big and there is ample tables both inside and outside on the balcony (where you can smoke). The food is very good and presentation is excellent, although we did have to wait a long time for our food. The waiting didn’t really matter because the place was full of beautiful people and good selection of craft beers, spirits and wine.
This place WILL be popular as it “TIC’s” all the boxes for anyone wanting to go out in cape town for a nice casual drink, or perfect for a first date. Good food, beautiful women (and men – if you are that way inclined) and awesome music by well know local resident DJ Sean Westcott means that the Village Idiot is not so dumb! Its basically the new La Parada – but you can actually eat the food! Go check it out!
